Pershing Square Renew, Inc is a non-profit collaboration between government, community, and business leaders in Downtown LA, all dedicated to supporting and facilitating Pershing Square’s revitalization.

Our Mission is to ensure that Pershing Square is an authentic reflection of Downtown LA’s thriving renaissance by creating a world-class public space for those who live in, work in, visit, and love DTLA.

Our Design Competition

Pershing Square Renew announced our international Design Competition In the Summer of 2015 to Reimagine the Heart of Los Angeles. On April 28, 2016, the four finalists presented their proposals to a packed theater of over 1,000 local citizens who were invited to share their aspirations and insights.

We invite you to experience the amazing energy and creativity that our teams and citizens have brought to Reimagine the Heart of L.A.:

Timeline

Summer 2013

Councilmember Jose Huizar forms the Pershing Square Task Force with the goal to “re-envision” Pershing Square.

Winter 2013

Pershing Square Task Force holds various community outreach meetings throughout Downtown LA to gather input about how the public feels about Pershing Square and how they would like to use the space in the future.

Summer 2014

Pershing Square Renew, a new non-profit organization, is formed. A total of $1 million is secured from the Department of Recreation and Parks for immediate improvements and $1 million in seed capital is provided by MacFarlane Partners for future improvements.

Community Outreach

Part of our job is to make sure that the community is as involved in the process as possible. We don’t just want to keep you updated on the project, we want you to help shape it. That’s why we have held –and will continue to hold– community meetings around Downtown LA where you’ll have a chance to let us know what you want out of your new park.

Winter 2014

Research and community input help inform the development of guidelines and criteria for the square's future redo, which are based on the community's needs and aspirations, engineering and design constraints of the square itself, and financial limitations.

Spring 2015

18 months of public outreach continues with community meetings and pop-up workshops

Summer 2015

Launch Pershing Square Renew Design Competition. Design teams are invited to a “vision” competition. What is a vision? It is not a final design for how the square should necessarily look, but a comprehensive strategy for how the square should perform. The guidelines and criteria developed in Winter 2014 are used as the basis to judge entries. The best new “vision” for a renewed Pershing Square is selected with the help of professional expertise and community input.

Winter 2015
